Alexander Calderon
Alexander Calderon is a graduate student at the New York University School of Medicine in the Stem Cell Biology program in the laboratory of Gregory David. He studies the interplay between cell cycle and differentiation in the murine hematopoietic system, hoping to understand the process of aging and cancer emergence better. Alexander first fell in love with research as an undergrad, where he was mentored by one of the few URM faculty at Case Western Reserve University, Diana L. Ramírez-Bergeron, who exposed him to the world of basic science research and fostered his scientific curiosity. This spurred Alexander to be involved in a number of ‘Diversity in Science’ initiatives during college and graduate school. Alexander’s future career goals involves being an independent investigator with his own laboratory, and his dream is to have a ‘Pre-K to PhD’ pipeline, where children from disadvantaged backgrounds can be exposed to science and be mentored throughout their schooling to consider scientific careers.
Alexander is super excited about the possibilities of JRNLclub to distribute science to a wider audience, as science communication becomes increasingly important as it relates to public policy. Additionally, anyone can relate to trying to keep up with the literature in their field and JRNLclub is one tool scientists can add to their repertoire in dealing with the vast amount of knowledge that is out there.
